Crimes in New York City are categorized in three ways: violations, misdemeanors, and felonies. Within those classifications, they can vary in severity. The NYC crime rate report is updated annually, but there are some sites that are updated weekly. This article outlines important statistics and information concerning the most updated crime rates.

What Is the Overall Crime Rate in New York City?

Despite being the largest city in America, New York City is ranked as one of the safest cities in America. In fact, a US News & World Report article ranked NYC as one of the Top 25 Safest Cities in America, along with fellow New York cities Long Island and Hudson Valley. A New York Police Department (NYPD) report showed a decrease in the overall crime rate in NYC from 2023 to the end of 2024.

Although crimes can be committed at any time, the crimes that were reported and have data according to the most recent NYPD report are: murder, rape, robbery, felony assault, burglary, grand larceny, and grand larceny auto, among others. What Are the Most Common Crimes Committed in New York City?

The crime that had the highest reported cases was petit larceny, which is stealing property valued at a low amount. Grand larceny, which is stealing property valued at a high amount, was the second-highest crime committed. Although it was the second-highest reported crime, the rate has decreased significantly from the previous year.

What Are the Least Common Crimes Committed in New York City?

The least common crimes reported in New York City, according to the NYPD, were murder and hate crimes. Though there was an increase in rape cases, reports of murder decreased.

Are Crime Rates in New York Improving?

In general, and per the NYPD report, crime rates are overall decreasing. Only 5 of the 12 reported crimes showed an increase in rates. Grand larceny auto showed the largest decrease in rates while shooting victims and burglary also showed significant decreases in rates. Rape cases are reportedly on the rise, as are felony assault, UCR rape, other sex crimes, and misdemeanor assault.

Domestic violence is defined as a pattern of behavior that involves one person asserting power over another person to maintain control. Although often physical, domestic violence can also involve emotional, mental, or financial abuse. It can also include threats and intimidation. Many people usually think of violence toward an intimate partner as the primary form of domestic violence; however, this crime can happen between a relative or loved one and their victim.

Domestic violence crimes can be felony assault, misdemeanor assault and other offenses, sex offenses, or violating a protective order. The NYPD crime reporting system collected data on domestic violence cases throughout the city and by county and found that there were 29,372 total intimate partner cases and 13,178 cases reported for victims of other family members, bringing the total to 42,550 as of July 2024.

The NYPD report also included how and where the crimes were committed. Crime data was collected for patrol, transit, and housing. There were 114,842 patrol crimes reported, 2,194 transit crimes, and 5,862 housing crimes reported.

Overall, New York City is a safe city compared to other US cities. NYC Crime rates have decreased compared to the previous years, and murder rates are relatively low. Because rates of larceny, whether petit larceny or grand larceny, are high, it is important to take precautions to keep your property safe, sealed, and secured.
